“Prince Andrew’s Royal Titles Under Scrutiny”

The UK would require approval from several countries, such as Australia, Canada, and Papua New Guinea, to completely remove Prince Andrew from Royal duties, as per a legal expert. Prince Andrew has agreed to cease using his titles and privileges due to his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, despite denying any misconduct allegations.

A group of MPs is urging the government to formally strip Prince Andrew of his titles, suggesting legislative actions to revoke his dukedom. Although the government is not obligated to act, there are avenues through which Andrew could be divested of his titles.

In a recent development, Prince Andrew announced the discontinuation of the use of his title, Duke of York, and honors like his knighthood of the Order of the Garter. This decision coincided with the impending release of a memoir by Epstein’s victim, Virginia Giuffre, who had accused Andrew of assaulting her when she was a teenager. Andrew refutes these claims, and Giuffre passed away earlier this year.

Following a controversial Newsnight interview in 2019, Andrew stepped back from public royal duties. Despite settling a lawsuit with Giuffre in 2022, he confirmed he would not resume public responsibilities.

His military roles and royal patronages have been returned to the Queen for reassignment to other working members of the royal family. Additionally, he declared the discontinuation of his HRH status.

Although Prince Andrew has voluntarily refrained from using his remaining titles, he intends to retain his princely status. Legal expert Craig Prescott explained that while his titles are effectively on hold, they still legally stand.

There are legal complexities in removing Andrew’s titles, including the need for an act of parliament. The Titles Deprivation Act 1917, enacted during World War I, is a precedent, but new legislation would be necessary for current circumstances.

In a hypothetical scenario, bespoke legislation could be introduced to nullify Andrew’s peerages, alongside the potential removal of his princely and HRH status through parliamentary action. However, such legislative actions come with uncertainties and potential debates in parliament.

Ultimately, the monarch holds the authority over princely and HRH status, as dictated by historical documents like letters patent. The removal of such titles has precedence, as seen in the case of former royal family members like Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana.

Although Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne, his position in the line of succession could be altered, pending approval from the 14 countries sharing the British monarch as their head of state.
