A man from Britain is potentially facing a maximum of 20 years behind bars after being convicted of the drug-induced killing of a man he had arranged to meet for a weekend of intimacy.
Aaron Rainbow, a 50-year-old helicopter pilot originally from Surrey, was found by a jury to have violently and deliberately murdered 38-year-old Oscar Tornero by stabbing him six times in various areas of his body following a binge on crystal meth and GHB.
Before his trial commenced on October 8, Rainbow had asserted that he had acted in self-defense, citing a state of confusion and paranoia induced by the mix of chemsex drugs consumed at his victim’s residence in Vallgorguina, located 30 minutes north of Barcelona.
During his testimony on the second day of the trial, Rainbow expressed a lack of responsibility for the incident, detailing his fear and fixation on the belief that Oscar was recording and live-streaming their drug-infused encounter, with strangers purportedly waiting outside to harm him.
The court heard that Rainbow, feeling threatened, sought a knife for protection from the kitchen and locked the door, later claiming to have no recollection of the number of times he stabbed Oscar, insisting he was in grave danger as per his instincts.
Oscar, who worked at a fashion store and also as an escort, was spotted by a neighbor fleeing his home severely injured after the attack on October 17, 2023. The police were alerted by the neighbor upon hearing Rainbow shouting threatening remarks.
Testimony was also presented from an individual who had engaged in drug-fueled intimacy with Rainbow in London three days before the fatal incident, where a similar violent episode occurred after consuming the same drugs. This person had messaged Rainbow on WhatsApp expressing fear of being harmed.
During the trial, Oscar’s family lawyer remarked that the events leading up to the stabbing were eerie in nature.
In the pre-trial account of the case presented to the Barcelona Provincial Court, it was stated that the accused and the victim had arranged to meet for sexual activities and drug use. Subsequently, after the ingestion of narcotics, Rainbow allegedly attacked Oscar with a knife, leading to the victim fleeing and ultimately succumbing to his injuries.
The state prosecutor had initially sought a 19-year prison term for Rainbow, but following the verdict, the demand was increased to 20 years in alignment with a private prosecutor representing the victim’s family.
Rainbow’s defense counsel had argued for his client’s acquittal, claiming temporary insanity, drug intoxication, and insurmountable fear at the time of the crime, asserting self-defense as the motive.
Rainbow’s family had likened the case to a suspenseful show, alleging mishandling of the investigation by Spanish authorities and the overlooking of potential evidence supporting Rainbow’s claims of being under surveillance and setup.
Rainbow was found guilty by a majority decision of 8-1 by the jury. The sentencing will be determined at a later date, following the standard practice in Spain, with credit given for the two years he has spent in custody since his arrest.
