Dr. Punam Krishan, a featured expert on BBC Morning Live, has raised concerns about the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole for treating conditions like heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. Acid reflux affects one in four adults in the UK, with occurrences commonly following large meals.
Individuals with persistent symptoms of acid reflux may be prescribed PPIs like omeprazole to alleviate discomfort. Dr. Punam has highlighted the importance of caution for those using these medications long-term, emphasizing the necessity of regular medical check-ups to monitor their effects.
As a practicing NHS GP and the resident doctor on BBC’s Morning Live, Dr. Punam provided insights on acid reflux to hosts Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton. She explained how the stomach’s acid, responsible for food digestion, can reflux into the esophagus due to a weakened sphincter valve, often triggered by heavy meals or lying down post-meal.
Regarding treatment options, Dr. Punam mentioned antacids and alginates like Gaviscon for occasional symptoms, while recommending PPIs like omeprazole and lansoprazole for persistent discomfort by reducing acid production at its source.
Highlighting the risks associated with prolonged PPI use, Dr. Punam cautioned about potential side effects like low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, and increased susceptibility to gut infections like Clostridioides difficile (C. diff). She stressed the importance of regular medical evaluations for individuals on extended PPI therapy to prevent adverse outcomes.
Additionally, Dr. Punam discussed lifestyle modifications to manage acid reflux, such as consuming smaller meals, avoiding lying down immediately after eating, and wearing loose-fitting clothing. She also suggested herbal teas like chamomile and ginger as alternatives to mint, along with maintaining a food diary to identify trigger foods and managing weight effectively.
Dr. Punam shared insights on a new screening test for early detection of esophageal cancer being piloted by the NHS, emphasizing the significance of proactive lifestyle changes alongside medication for managing acid reflux effectively.
