Concerns Rise as NHS Excludes Millions from Covid Vaccines

Some individuals among the six million excluded from receiving free Covid vaccines through the NHS have expressed concerns that health authorities are risking their lives by changing eligibility criteria. This year, individuals aged 65 to 74 without specific underlying health conditions are no longer entitled to free NHS Covid vaccinations. With the emergence of new virus strains like Nimbus and Stratus in the UK, patients are reporting symptoms such as a severe sore throat in addition to typical Covid-like signs.

Recent government data revealed a spike in Covid-related deaths, reaching the highest level in five months since May, with a 10% increase in confirmed infections and over 2,000 hospitalized patients in England.

Tracy Slaney, aged 55 and living in Mansfield with multiple health issues, expressed frustration at being excluded from receiving the Covid vaccine, fearing the potential life-threatening impact if she contracts the virus. She likened the situation to playing Russian Roulette, questioning why she is ineligible despite receiving other vaccinations like the flu shot.

The vaccination guidelines from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) now restrict Covid booster jabs on the NHS to individuals aged 75 and above, excluding frontline health and social care workers. This decision has left individuals like Linda and John Arthur from Kent concerned as their daughter Alexandra, aged 37 with complex medical needs, is no longer eligible for a Covid jab despite her vulnerability to respiratory issues.

There are growing worries that individuals aged 65 to 74 with conditions such as asthma and COPD are at increased risk of severe Covid complications and fatalities. While those not qualifying for free NHS vaccinations have the option to obtain them privately at high street pharmacies, prices range from around £20 for the flu vaccine to approximately £100 for the Covid booster.

High street pharmacies like Boots, Well Pharmacy, and Rowlands Pharmacy are offering vaccinations for individuals aged 12 and above. George Sandhu, deputy superintendent at Well Pharmacy, emphasized the importance of individuals ensuring they are adequately protected against Covid amidst rising cases and new variants.

A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care highlighted that Covid vaccination eligibility aligns with recommendations from the JCVI, emphasizing the importance of expert guidance in determining vaccine distribution policies.
