A tragic incident occurred in Rome as a tourist, Morimasa Hibino, a Japanese national, lost his life after falling approximately 22ft from the Pantheon’s perimeter wall. The 69-year-old man fell while sitting on the edge of the monument, leading to his demise. The incident took place around 9:50 pm local time, and emergency services were called to the scene after a passing priest discovered the man in a ditch. Despite efforts by responders, the man was pronounced dead at the site.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with initial reports indicating that the man lost his balance while seated on the wall. CCTV footage from the area where the man was sitting before the fall is being reviewed as part of the inquiry. The man’s daughter informed the police that her father fell due to a sudden illness, adding to the tragedy.
The Pantheon, renowned as Rome’s well-preserved ancient monument and now a church and popular tourist spot, was the location of this unfortunate event. This incident follows a recent event where an American tourist, residing in Taiwan, suffered serious injuries after falling onto a sharp metal spike while attempting to take a selfie at the Colosseum in Rome. The man, aged 47, had climbed a railing between the Colosseum’s arches for a better view and ended up impaling himself. He was rushed to San Giovanni Hospital for urgent surgery and was later reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
