“UK Households to Shift from Landlines to VoIP by 2027”

A significant shift is imminent in how UK households communicate with loved ones. Starting in January of next year, consumers nationwide will transition from traditional copper-wire phone lines, also known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a newer technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP represents a more modern approach that utilizes internet connections for making phone calls instead of outdated analog wiring. Despite initial apprehensions, there are numerous advantages to embracing this change, including enhanced call clarity, increased reliability, and added features like spam call filtering and call forwarding capabilities.

While the transition has been in the works for some time, a recent report from telecom experts at Phonely reveals that a substantial portion of adults over 50 in the UK are unaware of the impending shutdown of traditional landlines, despite repeated industry alerts and the extended deadline of January 31, 2027.

This lack of awareness could lead to a rush of last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations, and increased pressure on telecom providers, especially in rural areas.

Phonely emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that millions of individuals in the over-50 age group are still unaware of the forthcoming changes. With the 2027 deadline fast approaching, experts caution against delaying the switch to VoIP.

Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, expressed concern over the false sense of security created by the deadline extension and the potential chaos that could arise if individuals wait until the last minute to transition.

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, highlighted the importance of educating residents, particularly older individuals who rely on landlines for social connections and safety. He advised contacting telephone providers to understand options for the switch and ensure necessary support for services like telecare alarms.

The shift from traditional landlines to digital VoIP services involves retiring the UK’s copper-based PSTN network. After January 31, 2027, traditional landlines will cease to function, and calls will be routed through broadband connections instead.

While many younger households have already adopted mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, still rely on landlines for everyday communication, emergencies, and telecare alarms. Telephone providers are expected to guide customers through the transition, emphasizing that the change should not incur additional costs.

However, concerns have been raised about the reliance on internet access, especially for older consumers who are not online. Solutions for those without internet access are being explored ahead of the 2027 deadline, and individuals are encouraged to reach out to their phone providers to explore available options.
