“75-Year-Old Cyclist Receives Groundbreaking 3D-Printed Prosthetic”

A bicyclist, Dave Richards, was the first recipient of a revolutionary NHS facility for 3D-printed body parts. Dave, 75, survived a severe accident caused by a drunk driver, resulting in injuries to his back, pelvis, ribs, and severe burns on one side of his face. His treatment journey led him to The Bristol 3D Medical Centre, a cutting-edge facility offering advanced 3D scanning, design, and printing services within the NHS.

Located in Frenchay, Bristol, the center specializes in providing technical support and reconstructive solutions to trauma patients using state-of-the-art digital technology. Dave, residing in Devon, underwent a procedure at the center where he received a customized 3D prosthesis matching his facial features and skin tone.

Following the accident on July 21, 2021, Dave, an avid cyclist, was hit by a speeding intoxicated driver while riding with friends in Mere. During his recovery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary burns ward, Dave explored the option of prosthetics with specialists who explained the benefits of 3D scanning in creating custom prostheses that move naturally with the patient.

The utilization of advanced plastic resins in 3D printing allows for skin-safe materials that closely resemble bone, enhancing the natural feel of implants. Continuous 3D scanning helps monitor patient progress and adjust treatments as needed, particularly for scar management.

Dave expressed gratitude for the innovative treatments at the Bristol 3D Medical Centre, which have significantly contributed to his confidence and rehabilitation. Despite initial skepticism, Dave embraced the therapies, including a neck brace and scar splints, to ease scar tension and improve his daily life.

After months of indoor cycling, Dave is regaining his confidence to resume outdoor cycling. The driver responsible for the accident received a three-year sentence and a seven-year driving ban, with early release for good behavior, causing disappointment to Dave for the impact of the incident on his life.

By continuing to receive treatments and support, Dave remains optimistic about his recovery journey, emphasizing the importance of the advanced medical technologies that have played a crucial role in his healing process.
