“Forensic Breakthrough: DNA Traces Key to Louvre Heist”

At least 150 DNA traces, including fingerprints, were discovered at the crime scene where the Louvre burglars made off with stolen jewels valued at £176 million, according to investigators. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced that forensic teams are currently analyzing the samples in hopes of identifying the four thieves responsible for the daylight robbery at the world-renowned museum. Beccuau expressed optimism in locating the culprits swiftly, pointing out that if they have prior criminal records, their DNA would already be on file with the police.

The DNA samples were found on a stolen flatbed truck and on a discarded crash helmet and glove at the scene. Despite the suspects’ unsuccessful attempt to set fire to the vehicle, they managed to escape on two motorbikes after a seven-minute burglary at the Apollo Gallery, where seven significant historic pieces known as France’s “crown jewels” were taken.

While the Louvre’s internal CCTV cameras were not focused on the crime scene, surveillance footage outside the museum allowed authorities to track the criminals’ escape route out of Paris and neighboring areas. Beccuau emphasized the importance of swiftly apprehending the suspects to recover the stolen jewellery before any potential damage to the items.

Beccuau has initiated an investigation into the theft and criminal conspiracy by an organized criminal group, with potential penalties of up to 15 years in prison for those involved. The Banditism Repression Brigade of the Judicial Police is spearheading the inquiry, in collaboration with the Central Office for Combating Trafficking in Cultural Property.

The Louvre, a popular tourist destination attracting nearly 9 million visitors annually, predominantly from overseas, may see the stolen jewels kept hidden by the mastermind behind the heist or broken down for individual sale to conceal their origins. Criminals involved in art thefts often act under the instructions of dealers who struggle to sell stolen items on the illicit market.
