A British toddler named Cheryl Grimmer disappeared without a trace 55 years ago while her family was spending a day at the beach in Australia. Cheryl was just three years old at the time of her disappearance, which occurred on January 12, 1970.
Cheryl, along with her parents Carole and Vince, and her brothers Ricki, Stephen, and Paul, had moved from Bristol to Australia for a fresh start in 1968. The family was enjoying their time at Fairy Meadow beach when the incident took place.
On that fateful day, after a morning at the beach, Cheryl’s mother, Carole, decided it was time to head home. While the children were at the shower block, Carole gathered their belongings. When Ricki went to fetch Cheryl from the shower cubicle, she was nowhere to be found.
The family immediately launched a frantic search for Cheryl. Despite initial theories ranging from her hiding to being abducted, no concrete leads were found. A local teenager known as Mercury confessed to the murder in the early 1970s but was not charged due to lack of evidence.
In 2016, the case was reopened, leading to Mercury’s arrest in the following year. However, the trial was dismissed, and his confession was deemed inadmissible. Recently, Australian parliament member Jeremy Buckingham revealed Mercury’s real name and called for a new investigation into Cheryl’s murder.
Cheryl’s family, who have endured decades of uncertainty, have demanded answers. Her brother, Ricki, regrets his actions that day and remains committed to uncovering the truth behind Cheryl’s disappearance. Despite the passage of time, the family continues to seek closure and justice for Cheryl.
