Richard Hopkins, the former head of Red Bull, recently shared insights on Michael Schumacher’s health status and expressed doubts about the public ever seeing the Formula 1 icon again. Schumacher has been kept away from the public eye since sustaining a severe head injury in a skiing accident in December 2013, leading to him being placed in a medically induced coma for nearly 12 years.
Having formed a close bond with Schumacher during his time as a driver, Hopkins, who oversaw operations at Red Bull, emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding Schumacher’s well-being. In a recent interview with SPORTbible via William Hill, Hopkins mentioned that he is not privy to the latest updates on Schumacher’s health, noting the family’s desire for privacy.
Expressing reservations about discussing Schumacher’s condition due to the family’s wish for secrecy, Hopkins remarked, “I don’t anticipate Michael making a public appearance again.” He acknowledged his distance from the inner circle that includes figures like Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, who regularly visit Schumacher.
Hopkins reminisced about his friendship with Schumacher dating back to the 1990s when he worked at McLaren before transitioning to a pivotal role at Red Bull. Despite not being part of Schumacher’s close circle, Hopkins stressed the importance of respecting the family’s privacy concerning the F1 legend’s health.
He highlighted the unspoken code of confidentiality among those close to Schumacher, stating, “I believe that even if one were Ross Brawn’s closest confidant, inquiries about Michael’s well-being would be met with discretion.” Hopkins reiterated the family’s wish for information to remain private and emphasized the importance of honoring their wishes.
This approach underscores the family’s desire for privacy, and Hopkins emphasized his commitment to respecting their wishes, even if he possessed any sensitive information.
