A man who fabricated the abduction of his infant son and subsequently killed the child has been handed a sentence of over 30 years in prison. Jake Haro, aged 32, confessed to the murder during a prior court appearance, following an incident where he and his wife Rebecca falsely claimed their baby, Emmanuel, was taken while she was changing his diaper in their car outside a store in Yucaipa, California.
Authorities grew suspicious of the couple’s story, leading to their arrest a week later. Investigations revealed that Haro was responsible for the death of the child, although Emmanuel’s body has not been located. Haro was convicted in a California court for the murder, filing a false police report, and endangering a child, resulting in a lengthy prison term exceeding three decades.
Rebecca Haro, aged 41, has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody on a bail of $1 million. Riverside County prosecutors sought a sentence of 31 years to life for Haro, citing his involvement in the death of Emmanuel and the previous severe injury to another child in 2018. Brandon Smith, an assistant district attorney, emphasized Haro’s actions, stating that he had caused harm to two young children and deserved severe punishment.
The tragic incident unfolded when Rebecca reported Emmanuel’s supposed kidnapping from a store parking lot in Yucaipa. She recounted being approached by someone and then losing consciousness, only to wake up and find her son missing. Despite initial sympathy for the distressed mother, police scrutiny raised doubts about the authenticity of her account.
