“Aldi Regains Title as UK’s Most Budget-Friendly Supermarket”

Aldi has regained its position as the most budget-friendly supermarket in the UK, according to recent research conducted by consumer group Which?. The study compared the prices of a shopping list comprising 70 items at various supermarkets. Last month, the average cost of the items at Aldi was £121.22, narrowly beating out Lidl, which had an average cost of £122.35. Tesco, while slightly more expensive, offered savings for Clubcard members, with an average cost of £133.65 compared to £136.20 for non-members.

On the higher end of the price spectrum, Waitrose was found to be the most expensive, with an average total of £166.79 for the same list of items. Opting to purchase all groceries from either Aldi or Waitrose could result in savings of over £45 for a family.

Which? conducts this comparison monthly across eight different supermarket chains, analyzing a mix of own-label products and branded items like Birds Eye peas and Hovis bread, as well as essentials like milk and butter.

In a separate comparison involving a larger list of 183 groceries, Asda emerged as the most cost-effective option, with an average total of £455.52 last month. Asda’s commitment to cutting prices in response to market competition has positioned it as a competitive choice for shoppers seeking a broad range of branded goods.

With the holiday season approaching, concerns over food prices are heightened for many households. Which? emphasizes the importance of shopping around, as selecting one supermarket over another could result in significant savings, potentially up to 27%.

    The price breakdown based on 70 items includes: Aldi – £121.22, Lidl (including loyalty discount) – £122.35, Lidl – £122.40, Asda – £133.59, Tesco (including loyalty discount) – £133.65, Tesco – £136.20, Morrisons – £137.40, Sainsbury’s (including loyalty discount) – £137.77, Sainsbury’s – £141.62, Ocado – £154.37, Waitrose – £166.79.
