Henrik Stenson, known for his Ryder Cup success, faces uncertainty in securing spots in specific DP World Tour events. This change follows his hefty fines for joining the breakaway group LIV Golf, totaling over £1 million.
Reportedly, an undisclosed regulation now eliminates the 49-year-old’s guaranteed entry into tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the Scottish Open. The classification for qualification, previously granting exemptions to legendary golfers like Stenson in the Rolex Series events, has been significantly downgraded from Category 5 to Category 11a.
Stenson, who ranks seventh on the career money list with earnings exceeding £28 million, returned to the tour after his expulsion from LIV Golf and a two-month ban. This adjustment in rules impacts not only Stenson but also other prominent golfers such as Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Paul Casey.
Despite the possibility of still participating in elite tournaments or receiving sponsor invitations, Stenson may face challenges. The Telegraph’s report indicates that at least one LIV player was denied entry to the upcoming Desert Classic in January.
In contrast, Rory McIlroy, who refrained from joining the breakaway league, clinched victory in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, securing the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth consecutive year. Surpassing golf legend Seve Ballesteros, McIlroy aims to become the leading European in Order of Merits, a goal that excites him as he reflects on the significance of his achievements.
