“Retro Tech Revival: Old iPods in High Demand on eBay”

If you happen to have an old iPod tucked away in storage, it could be a good idea to retrieve it, give it a charge, and consider selling it on an online auction platform. There seems to be a resurgence of interest among Apple enthusiasts in this iconic technology, which provides uninterrupted hours of music playback without the typical distractions of a smartphone.

According to eBay, there has been a noticeable uptick in the demand for old iPods, with searches surging by more than 20% last year. Particularly, searches for the iPod Classic saw a remarkable 25% year-over-year increase, with the term “iPod” being searched over 1,200 times per hour on eBay globally in 2025.

eBay has reported that several iPod models experienced a significant surge in their average sales prices among global eBay users in 2025 when compared to 2023:

    – iPod Nano 3rd generation: Over 60% increase
    – iPod 3rd generation: Over 50% increase
    – iPod Nano 4th generation: Over 45% increase
    – iPod Classic 6th generation: Over 40% increase

If you own any of these mentioned music players languishing unused, it might be worth exploring the possibility of selling them. A quick search on eBay today reveals that some iPod models are fetching prices well above £100.

The trend of vintage technology is not limited to Apple products. Retro tech items like turntables, cassette players, and walkman-style devices are also experiencing a resurgence in popularity.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE iPOD

The iconic iPod, first introduced by Apple in October 2001, promised to put “1,000 songs in your pocket.” It revolutionized how people purchased, organized, and enjoyed music by working seamlessly with Apple’s iTunes software. Initially featuring a mechanical scroll wheel and hard drives, later iterations like the Nano became more compact and lightweight.

The iPod played a pivotal role in Apple’s resurgence and played a significant part in the shift of the music industry towards digital distribution. Over time, the iPod lineup expanded with models like the iPod mini, shuffle, and touch. With the rise of smartphones, Apple discontinued the iPod in 2022, marking the end of an influential era. However, its cultural impact endures among music enthusiasts worldwide.
