Millions of Gmail users are set to have the option to change their email address to a new one. Google previously hinted at this update, and now it is being implemented globally. According to a recent update on the Gmail blog page by Google, users will be able to switch their Google Account email ending in gmail.com to a new address also ending in gmail.com.
This change could be a positive development for users who wish to alter their username or have experienced changes in their circumstances. However, Google has emphasized that this feature is gradually rolling out to all users, and it may not be available to everyone immediately.
The new system will allow both the old and new email addresses to coexist, ensuring that any emails sent to the existing Gmail address will be automatically forwarded to the new one. Google assures users that their account data, including photos, messages, and emails associated with the original address, will remain unaffected.
To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing any emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if prompted.
– Click on Personal info at the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Under “Google Account email,” click on Change Google Account email.
– If the option is not available, it may not have been rolled out to you yet.
– Enter the new desired username, ensuring it has not been previously used or deleted.
– Click on Change email and confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Upon completion, the new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will remain as an alternate email.
