A 10-year-old girl initially deemed “fine” by medical professionals is now experiencing a decline in her ability to walk. Her request for a specialized wheelchair has been turned down by the NHS.
Faye Errington expressed frustration over what she described as repeated misdiagnoses of her daughter, Orla, by doctors. Orla was born with three heart defects, one kidney, and only one fully formed hip joint. Despite spending just five days outside the hospital after birth, she was readmitted due to health complications, including a heart murmur.
At three months old, Orla faced life-threatening episodes where she momentarily stopped breathing and choked. These incidents continue to trouble her, requiring ongoing respiratory therapy, nighttime monitoring, and airway clearance procedures.
In addition to her health challenges, Orla copes with severe anxiety issues and a rare genetic disorder known as Kabuki Syndrome, affecting various aspects of her body.
Daily, Orla experiences excruciating pain when attempting to walk due to severe knee dislocations, a misaligned thigh bone, and other skeletal irregularities resulting from her genetic condition. Consequently, she frequently falls and can only manage short distances, relying on a manual wheelchair that poses difficulties for her to operate.
Faye has launched a plea for a powered wheelchair for her daughter after the NHS denied her application. To raise funds, she initiated a GoFundMe campaign to secure the necessary equipment.
Expressing desperation, Faye highlighted Orla’s immobility, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance. She believes that early intervention by healthcare providers could have alleviated her daughter’s suffering.
Faye recounted instances where medical professionals dismissed her concerns about Orla’s legs, only later discovering significant issues like the absence of a hip socket and dislocated kneecaps following distressing surgeries.
Despite persistent advocacy, Faye faced challenges in obtaining proper diagnosis and care for Orla until a healthcare provider acknowledged the severity of her condition. The journey of surgeries and medical consultations has taken a toll on Orla’s mental well-being, hindering her development and causing her to miss an extended period of school.
